In her tragically short life and even shorter career, Amy Winehouse gave the world a fleeting glimpse of what might have been. For a few years her star burned brightly, before the 27-year old with the passionately soulful voice and emotionally drenched lyrics was fatally undone by her own personal demons.
Amy’s music touched the whole world and while a true original when it came to both composition and performance, she was proud of her varied influences which informed her style and sparked her imagination.
This CD includes 26 tracks of Amy’s favourite music, ranging from the cool jazz vocals of Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald through the lush orchestrations and pure pop sensibilities of Phil Spector’s Wall Of Sound, via classic singer-songwriters like Carole King and crashing in on the late 80s Rap sounds of NWA – all via Be Bop, Soul, Rhythm & Blues, Motown, Ska and many other styles.
This delightful compilation is a true tribute to Amy’s own music and represents the sounds which bought to her, happiness, joy and inspiration during a life which, albeit short, was one lived with the type of gusto most of us can barely dare to imagine.
